reason在定語從句中的用法

先行詞是Reason的定語從句一般有以下三種結構：

Reason + why

第一個常見的結構是在名詞reason后面接一個why引導的定語從句。

想象一下這種情形：一群學生正試圖找出為什么他們的實驗產生了異常結果。也許他們當中有人發現測量工具尚未清洗。他或她可能會說：

This may be the reason why our results were unusual.

這可能是我們的結果異常的原因。

以why引導的定語從句直接接在名詞reason后面。

Reason + 0

在第二種常用結構是在名詞reason后不用任何詞引導。

例如在本文開頭的問句中：

Why did you go to the train station?

你可以回答說：

The only reason I went there was to meet my friend.

我去那里的唯一原因是去見我的朋友。

或者：

The reason I went to the train station was to meet my friend.

我去火車站的原因是去見我的朋友。

你可能會聽到第三種結構——名詞reason后跟一個that引導的定語從句。

還是我們開頭關于火車站的問句：

Why did you go to the train station?

你可以說：

The reason that I went there was to meet my friend.

我去那里的原因是去見我的朋友。

以上是三種常見的結構。

還有一種結構是Reason + for which,這在語法上也是正確的，但不如以上三種常見。

例如：A purpose is areason for which something exists or isdone.

1. for... reason(s) 因為...的原因

如：He was late for this reason.

2. the reason for (doing) sth

(某人做)某事的原因

如：I don't know the reason for him/his being late.

= I don't know the reason for him to be late.

3. the reason + 定語(從句)+ be + that引導的表語從句

The reason why he was late for school is that he stayed up last night.
